Discussion

This was again a fun campaign to play. More fun was had towards the end though. The reason for this is that in the first couple of scenarios, Good got it handed to them and it was really quite demotivating to see how badly they were beaten. Because of their lack of success, Evil was often made even stronger in scenarios due to special campaign rules, resulting in Good losing even more. The first two scenarios weren’t really balanced in my opinion, at least not with the current rules (no volley fire). Still, they did feel thematic. From the three LotR campaigns this is the one with the largest number of scenarios and it was fun to have a large number of smaller ones compared to a few really big ones. Every scenario did feel very unique so I really enjoyed that.

Personal highlights for me were:

  • The Wrath of Rohan, first time using cavalry in the campaign and it was awesome to have Rohan chomp down the Uruks and Orcs. Also very tense race against the clock, because Pippin was being taken off to Fangorn.
  • Hold the Fort, really fun defending the palissade and quite exciting with some tactical decisions to be made (when to send out the cavalry?)
  • The Helm’s Deep scenarios (The Deeping Wall, Retreat to the Keep), while exhausting to play, they succeeded in being exciting and recreating the feeling from the films.
  • Breach the Dam, my favourite scenario in the campaign. With the new Brutal power attacks and particularly the cool ‘Bludgeon’ special rule, it was really fun letting Treebeard and an Ent romp through Isengard and kill as many Orcs and Uruks as possible. Some really bad luck caused the Ent to die quite soon, but Treebeard managed to impress with 31 kills, often killing 5 Uruks in one turn!
  • Escape from Osgiliath, while not a very epic scenario, it is quite fun and very different from every scenario I’ve played so far. I enjoy it a lot when game designers try to switch things up within a given game system.
  • Honourable mention: Retreat to Edoras, I think this scenario has the potential to be amazing. How I played it, it was quite unbalanced and therefore not as fun, but it is a very unique scenario and could be a real winner with a few balancing tweaks.
