The Evil side wins by killing Radagast.

Special rules

Woodland Guardians – The Ents follow the ‘Tree-ish’ special rule as described in BGIME #32. This means that you roll a D6 for each Ent at the start of each turn. If the result is lower than the current turn number, the Tree awakens and may act as normal. If the Ent does not awaken, it may take no action, although it will fight if attacked in close combat. An Ent will automatically awaken if it is attacked, whether in close combat, through missile fire or by a magic power.

Fury of the Forest – Radagast gains the following two Magical Powers:

Constrict (5+/18″): The target suffers a Strength 7 hit. If the target survives, they are placed under the effects of the Transfix Magical Power.

Awaken the Wood: Instead of casting a spell in the Movement Phase, Radagast can spend Will points to affect the dice rolled for the Ent Tree-ish roll. For each Will point spend, reduce the result of the D6 rolled by 1.

Eagles Gwaihir can arrive as a Reinforcement. Similarly to the Tree-ish rule, you roll a D6 at the start of the Good movement phase. If the result is lower than the current turn number, Gwaihir may enter play from a board edge of the Good player’s choosing. Additionally, Gwaihir can be mounted by Radagast, following the Passenger rules.

Inhospitable Any model moving within 2″ of a tree counts as moving through difficult terrain. Radagast, Gwaihir and the Ents are unaffected because of their Woodland Creature special rule.

Pre-game tactics and thoughts

The magazine itself comes with some Tactics. It says it’s a difficult scenario to win for either side and can easily end in a Draw. It seems a no-brainer for Radagast to cast his Terrifying Aura as quickly as possible, and then to enhance this by casting an Aura of Dismay. Panic Steed is useful against Warg Riders, and Renew is extra useful on restoring Ents and Gwaihir. Under the new rules, monsters are a lot more formidable. So if this scenario was balanced under the old rules, Good should have an easier time under the new ones.

The tactics for Evil seem fairly straightforward: kill the Wizard and avoid the monsters as much as possible.

I don’t know how things will go, but this scenario has always been a dream of mine to play. And with the finished Rhosgobel and painted Ents, the time is finally here!

The game

The Evil player deploys their troops first, by splitting the Uruk-hai and Wargs into four groups of at least 5 models each. Assign each group to a board edge and position them anywhere within 6″ of the assigned edge.

Radagast begins play inside Rhosgobel. The Ents are deployed anywhere on the board at least 12″ away from Evil models. Gwaihir enters play later.

Radagast will have to move outside to have a chance of surviving.

1G. -> Evil begins. The Uruk-hai move up towards Rhosgobel, often being slowed down by the difficult terrain around the trees. Radagast successfully casts Terrifying Aura using his free Will point. He is probably safest close to the Ents, so he leaves his cabin.

2G. -> Evil begins. No awakened Ents or Gwaihir. The Evil forces close in on Radagast and some archers will have a clear shot. Radagast thinks about the spell he wants to cast. Panic Steed is good, Constrict would be good, but he decides to cast Aura of Dismay with 3 Will, which succeeds. The 3 shots and throwing spear all fail to Hit, so that was likely a good choice.

Radagast now has a Terrifying Aura and an Aura of Dismay around him.

3G. -> Good begins. No awakened Ents or Gwaihir. Radagast casts a Panic Steed on the closest Warg Rider, but rolls a 2 and fails. Unfortunately for him there isn’t a lot of cover around his house, which would have been helpful with his Stalk Unseen rule. So instead he dashes towards one of the Ents. Two Warg Riders fail their Courage test to Charge, but three Uruk-hai succeed. With 2 Pikes supporting, Radagast is now Trapped against 5 Uruks. Still, he manages to win the Fight, rolling a 6. He fails to Wound though.

Radagast is Trapped, but wins the combat.

4G. -> Good begins. Radagast uses his free Will point to allow the Ent next to him to awaken and runs away. The Ent charges 2 Uruks. 2 Pikes, another Uruk and a Uruk-hai Captain successfully Charge the Ent. Evil wins the fight and manage to deal 2 Wounds. Luckily the Uruk-hai Captain botches his rolls, meaning the Ent lives at least another turn.

The Ent is dealt 2 wounds.

5G. -> Good begins. The other Ent awakens and Gwaihir enters the board. The Uruk-hai Captain on the rock calls a Heroic Move, hoping to be able to Charge Radagast before he gets away. But Radagast countercalls and wins the roll-off. Gwaihir swoops in and charges a Warg Rider. Radagast casts a Renew on the wounded Ent using 2 Will, restoring 1 Wound. He then mounts Gwaihir and the wounded Ent retreats toward Gwaihir and Ragagast. The Uruk-hai Captain fails his Courage test and so does another Uruk. This means Evil decides to stay back – from a safe Barge distance from Gwaihir. On the other side the newly awakened Ent is Charged by 2 Uruks that are both being supported by a Pike.

Gwaihir to the rescue!

Gwaihir easily wins the combat and slays the Warg Rider. The Ent also wins and kills 3 out of the 4 Uruks.

6E. -> Evil begins. Gwaihir calls a Heroic Move, which the Uruk-hai Captain countercalls with his final Might point. Good wins the roll-off, allowing Gwaihir to swoop and Charge a whole number of enemies. Radagast uses 2 Will to successfully restore the wounded Ent to his starting total. The Aura of Dismay causes a number of failed Courage tests, meaning only the Mightless Uruk-hai Captain joins the combat against Gwaihir and Radagast. He is supported by two pikes, but those get charged by the renewed Ent. The other Ent has to fight an Uruk-hai Captain that is being supported by 2 pikes.

Time to do some damage!

All Uruks with missile weapons try to wound Radagast, but none Wound. The Ent farthest away loses his Combat and takes 2 Wounds, costing the Uruk Captain 1 Might. Gwaihir wins his combat and kills the Mightless Captain, as well as a Warg Rider and an Uruk Pikeman. The renewed Ent kills the two Pikemen he Charged. 8 Evil models and 1 Captain have been killed so far.

This brave Ent takes 2 Wounds.

7G. -> Good begins. Radagast restores 1 Wound on the wounded Ent, using 2 Will. The renewed Ent kills his 2 opponents and Gwaihir slays 4 enemies. On the other side, the brave Ent unfortunately goes down. With 14 Evil models dead, as well as 1 Captain, Good only has to slay the other Captain.

Good has almost won, but just lost the upper Ent.

8E. -> Evil begins. The Uruk-hai Captain wants to flee into the woods where Gwaihir and the Ent can’t get to him. Radagast calls a Heroic Move, which is counter-called by the Captain. Good wins the roll-off once again, which means Gwaihir flies over the Captain but can’t Charge him just yet. Radagast uses his final Will points to try and cast a Constrict, but fails. It is more likely the Captain will be able to wound Radagast than it is for him to successfully hide in the forest for 12 more turns, so he decides to Charge Gwaihir. Both sides roll a 6, but Gwaihir wins because of the higher Fight value and devours the Captain. Good victory!

Gwaihir eats the final Captain.

Aftermath

Victory for Good. This was a stand-alone scenario, so there are no further effects.

Post-game thoughts

It was fun to use so many cool and powerful models on the Good side. And to see the monster buffs from the new edition in action. That said, this did feel a bit one-sided. While the Ents did go down pretty quickly and weren’t as reliable, Gwaihir was an absolute powerhouse. He almost single-handedly won Good the game. That said when the Ents did win their combats, they had high damage output as well.

With the new rules I don’t think this is very balanced. It is true that Good won most Priorities and roll-offs, which did help. But even then, Gwaihir is so powerful and with the Aura of Dismay on Radagast it was harder to reliably Charge, though the Uruks managed this fine.

Under the old rules and profiles, I think Evil might have the advantage. You could just feed the Ents some units and are much more likely to win against Gwaihir, who used to be a lot weaker back in the earliest editions.

It was fun to see Radagast’s magic actually doing something. All in all I think this is a cool and fun scenario, but could become one-sided quickly.

  1. This does look like a fun scenario! Its rare to get so many powerful minis to throw at your opponents like the Good side has here. The board looks beautiful as well! I’m very pleased that Radagast was able to get a win in this one 🙂

    • Went to look for my copy of bgime #79 and realized I only had up to #78. 🙁
I like how you use the Radagast figure that was in the scenario depicted vs the newer one.
Are your ents homemade? I don’t recognize it but I never collected them so don’t really know all the models.
FYI, DaveT from the one ring has a blog also for his battle reports (https://www.davetownsend.org/Battles/lotr.html)

      • Hi Bret,
Thanks for dropping by! The Ents are the classic metal miniatures. They were in a Made to Order a couple of years ago, which is when I bought them.

I’ve bookmarked DaveT’s battle reports. Happy to see those still going despite the One Ring being unavailable. 🙂

    • Thank you! Me too 🙂
